ALPESCA S.A. Success Case

Alpesca is a company engaged in the catching and processing of fish products for the European market. The products are exported in consumer-ready packages. Brands like Unilever and Nestlé are its two major clients. The company processes about 10% of all the hubssi hake caught in Argentina. The goal was to obtain the certification of the Quality System against the BRC Food standard.

What we did

In 2009, we led the implementation of the Quality Management and Food Safety System based on the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 5 (GFSI). Back then, Alpesca S.A. (www.alpesca.com.ar) was renowned as the largest fishery in the country, with over 1000 workers in its plant located in Puerto Madryn (Province of Chubut) and its own fleet. From its beginnings, Alpesca focused its efforts on the quality of its products and knew how to make a difference in the segment. Therefore, when we started evaluating the best standard to certify its management systems, both its clients and its head office suggested BRC. The Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 5 (BRC) forms part of a set of standards deemed equivalent by the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative), which are indispensable to market food products in the European supermarkets.

How we worked

We interacted with all company sectors through an implementation team for a year and a half. We also drafted the QMS documentation surveying every process onsite. The heads of each area became involved in the project by aligning processes with the requirements set forth by the standard.

What we achieved

Alpesca became the first Argentine fishery to obtain this certification, a goal it achieved with the highest rating. In 2010, the certification was renewed with the same success. back
